Join the Future of Wildlife Discovery.

A revolution in wildlife mapping and conservation, delivered by Odonata Foundation.

Imagine pinpointing the habitats of threatened species with just a few water samples. Thanks to breakthroughs in environmental DNA (eDNA) technology, this is now possible, and we need your help!

Understanding the habitats of precious wildlife, like the platypus and the Murray River Short-Necked Turtle, is crucial for conserving their environments for future generations. Please join us in collecting water samples, which contain DNA from animals that have recently passed through, offering a glimpse into the past 14 days of wildlife activity.

Discover why eDNA sampling is a groundbreaking advancement in our quest to protect nature.

  • “I enjoyed doing the Great Australian Wildlife Search with my 16-year-old son to show him the types of projects that community members can contribute to, to help our environment.”

  • “Great to know what the state of our waterways are, from a biological perspective. If they are healthy, we need to keep it up, and if they are not, we need to work out how we can improve it.”

  • “Worthwhile activity, self-directed, I felt competent based on thorough training. Training was clear concise and visual also backed up by offline written guide allowing me to follow step by step instructions.”

  • “This eDNA is more robust science and not subjective. It also contributes to data and may support further investigation and/or funding to regions.”

Inviting volunteers in the Murray-Darling Basin Region

We are currently preparing for the Spring 2024 season and will be releasing testing sites in September.

With the generous support of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority(MDBA) and the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder, we will be carrying out testing on 150 selected sites from the Spring 2023 Season at no cost to our citizen scientists.

The sites have been chosen for their biodiveristy values and distribution. Between these sites, we have a great picture of the health of the Basib.

Normally, it costs $600 per sampling site, covering everything from reservation to data analysis and reporting. This incredible opportunity to contribute to our seasonal testing efforts wouldn't be possible without MDBA's support.
